Make your money stretch further on your cruise vacation massages and spa treatments with these proven suggestions.

One of the best ways to unwind and pamper yourself during a cruise vacation is by indulging in a massage or other spa treatment. However, spa services onboard can be pricey, leaving travelers wondering if the splurge is worth it. The good news? There are ways to enjoy the relaxation and rejuvenation of a cruise spa experience without breaking the bank. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned traveler, these are nine of my best tips to help you make the most of your vacation dollars while still enjoying some well-deserved luxury.

9 Ways to Save Money Enjoying Massage and Other Spa Services on Your Next Cruise Vacation

1. Look for Embarkation Day Discounts and Raffle

Cruise ship spas frequently host tours or open-house events on the first day of your voyage. These events are not only an excellent way to explore the spa facilities but also a chance to learn about special promotions, complimentary samples, and even raffles for free or discounted treatments. Don’t miss this opportunity to get insider knowledge on the best deals while enjoying a sneak peek at the luxurious amenities the spa has to offer. Also, inquire about savings if you reserve two or three treatments.

2. Check Your Daily Schedule

Look at the daily paper in your cabin or check the day’s events on the cruise line’s app. They may reveal limited-time offers. Taking advantage of these discounts early can ensure some extra luxurious pampering without paying full price.

3. Choose Port Day Specials

Port days often bring opportunities for discounts at the ship’s spa. While most guests are off exploring the destination, the spa tends to be less busy. They often reward people who book those times with discounted treatments to entice those who are enjoying the extra peacefulness of the ship. This can be a win-win: you avoid the crowds on the ship and enjoy a quieter spa experience at a fraction of the cost. Plan ahead by reviewing the cruise itinerary and identifying the best days to stay onboard for a spa appointment.

By reserving your spa services in advance, you can lock in the time and service you prefer. Watch for sales the line may offer during peak shopping times to save money.

4. Book in Advance

Some cruise lines allow you to book spa treatments before boarding the ship. By doing so,

you may be able to access online-only specials or packages unavailable once onboard. Booking in advance also ensures you secure your preferred time slot, which can be particularly valuable on sea days when spa appointments tend to fill up quickly. Check your cruise line’s website or app for pre-cruise booking options and take advantage of any early-bird discounts. Some lines offer limited time-frame “sales” of up to 30% off. Check your app or online account during holiday time periods that promote sales in general (i.e. Black Friday, Christmas, New Year, Presidents Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Labor Day)

If your budget doesn't allow for full services, see if there are half-hour treatments and chair massages available.

5. Consider Shorter Treatments

You don’t have to book a lengthy 60- or 90-minute session to feel pampered. Many spas offer shorter treatments, such as 30-minute massages, facials, or foot rubs, which are equally rejuvenating but come at a lower cost.  For example, I enjoyed a shorter and somewhat spur-of-the-moment chair massage in the solarium on an MSC ship. These mini-treatments can provide the relaxation you’re looking for while keeping your budget in check. It’s a smart way to indulge without over-committing financially.

Aromatherapy scents, hot stones, and special oils can take your massage up another level, but it will also take the cost up a notch, too.

6. Skip the Extras

When booking a spa treatment, you might be offered add-ons like aromatherapy, hot stones, or special oils. While these extras can enhance the experience, they do increase the cost. Unless they’re part of a promotional package, stick to the basic treatment to save money unless you feel it’s an added experience you’d regret passing on. You’ll still enjoy a relaxing session without the unnecessary upsells.

7. Take Advantage of Loyalty Perks

Frequent cruisers often enjoy special benefits through loyalty programs, and spa discounts are a common perk. Depending on your loyalty tier, you may be eligible for reduced rates on exclusive spa offers. Be sure to review your loyalty program benefits before your cruise and take full advantage of any spa-related perks.

If you have Onboard Credit (free spending money!) due to the promotion you're booked on, group status or military service, consider using it to offset the cost of spa services.

8. Use Spa Credit

If your cruise package includes onboard credit (free spending money), consider using it for

spa services. Onboard credit can often be applied to various purchases, including treatments, making it a great way to offset the cost. Some loyalty programs or travel promotions also offer spa credits, so check your booking details to see if you’re eligible.

Remember that spa treatments DURING a cruise don't mean they have to be ON the ship. Consider planning some shoreside pampering.

9. Combine Port Activities with a Local Spa Treatment

Plan your own port day with a special treat. Sometimes, the best way to save on a massage or spa service is to skip the ship’s spa altogether and explore local options at your destinations. Many ports of call feature excellent spas that offer treatments at a fraction of what you’d pay onboard.

For instance, I once enjoyed a 20-minute massage under a beachfront cabana during an excursion that included lunch and free time at a local resort. The massage was both affordable and unforgettable due to the setting. My best port massage was in Mazatlán on a Princess Cruises' Mexican Riviera sailing. I pre-planned a visit to a local spa for a fantastic massage that I’d book again in a heartbeat. These experiences not only provided excellent value but were also part of my immersing myself in the local culture those days. Ensure the spa is reputable by checking reviews or asking for recommendations.
